CHAPTER 9

AUTUMN

After Calissa and I flee the dressing room—thanks to the store associate who threatened to call security—she goes to find Bear to reschedule arrangements for their trip. Meanwhile, over the next twenty minutes, I catch Janessa up on Callie’s and my events of the day—minus the fitting room details. Those will live in my head rent free. But now, I'm more conflicted than ever.

“She asked you on a date … inside an airport?” Seated on a bench by the window, Janessa looks at me like she doesn’t recognize me anymore.

To be fair, I hardly recognize myself, given the many butterflies and knots in my stomach.

“First, you two kiss—wait. Let me start over. First she gets you to dress up for the holidays, something I’ve been trying to do for years—then you two kiss, and now she asks you on a date while trapped in an airport by a blizzard. What’s next? She kisses you at midnight? You are starring in my romance movie.” She expels a breath and huddles close like we’re strategizing a game plan. “So, what are you going to do?”

My gaze diverts towards the open Sapphire Isle brochure in my lap. I just finished reading it for the hundredth time. “I told her I’d get back to her. But I’m going to decline.”

Her jaw drops. “Are you kidding me?!” She slaps her forehead. “Please tell me you're joking, Autumn. I’m the director of this movie. You have to go.”

“Based on us hanging out earlier, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

She motions with her hands. “I don’t understand. Was the kiss that bad?”

The image of us rushing out of the store hand in hand crosses my mind, Calissa pulling me into a dark corner and using those very kissable lips again. “God, no.” I rest my head against the icy cold window, hoping for answers. “It was amazing—too perfect, and that's the problem.” I begin picturing the pending disappointment in Calissa’s eyes. My heart’s sinking lower by the minute from thoughts of how we ended the first time. My cowardice. “I don’t see the point of getting our hopes up again. What happens when you and I leave? How do I know another long-distance relationship is the answer? If I move, what about us? Our clients?” I sigh. Indecisiveness is not me. “Maybe Calissa and I are too late.”

Appearing beyond exasperated, Janessa squints, then shakes her head. This might be the most frustrated she’s ever been with me. “But she wants to go on a date … tonight.”

“I know … I’m just tired.” I exhale towards the window. Perhaps she’ll drop this conversation if my words are believable enough. “I feel like I haven’t slept in days, and I’m starting to get hungry.” She knows how I get when I need food. “Perhaps I’ll have a different answer after I eat dinner.”

“I bet there will be food on your date.”

I compress my lips. “You’re not helping.”

She holds her palms toward me in defeat. “Okay. I’m sorry for being facetious.
